h&m marches on...

aw, crap! now this is a real conundrum...my city of San Francisco is going ga-ga over the simultaneous openings of TWO new H&M stores later this month. It's going to be a frenzy since these are the first H&M's on the West Coast, and Stella McCartney has designed some of their newest things which are going to make them SUPER fabulous and awesome. So out of curiosity I did a search for H&M sweatshop practices and of course turned up some...like, how could a company make really detailed runway-ready sweaters and sell them for only $60? why, cheap labor, of course!
argh! why does this have to be? I mean, that's what keeps the prices low, but dang, it really sucks that they make such great things and yet I can't bring myself to purchase anything. looks like i'll have to buy *used* H&M things. I bet that a few months after the grand opening, the thrift stores will be full of 'em...like how you can buy almost any type of IKEA used furniture on every craigslist within thirty miles of one! Har!

crud!
i've never shopped at h&m, but i was psyched for the new stella line. somehow i guess i equated stella with compassion- you know, the whole vegan shoes thing- and thought her line would be different. and maybe it is? but probably not. what a disappointment.
yeah, i sound like a econazi hard-ass right now, but just wait until the store doors open!
i...may...not...be...able...to...resist!
:)
as a follow-up, i have been reading good things about how eco-conscious stella herself is. the reports sort of vary and it's mostly that h&m has questionable tactics with overseas labor sometimes. it's a hard call.
i boycott h&m.
who needs it? it's disposable fashion anyway...
This article says it's okay to shop at H&M. Thank gawd.

dudes
Have you checked Top Shop in London on a Saturday afternoon. it is horrific.
H&M is pretty evil too, but you're right - they're clothes are pretty cool.
How can we:
a) stop cool people endorsing H&M and Top Shop so that people will realise it is just cheap-ass, bad quality, sweatshop stuff?
OR
b) encourage them to do what you are doing and make their clothing by recycling old clothing. this would be a cheap source of materials. mmmm not sure how they would get around the sweatshop thing and still keep the clothes as cheap.
i worked in the fashion industry for 10 years (in manufacturing/production) and when the price of a garment is too good to be true. it usually means there was cheap labor involved.
in my experience, however, work was never intended to go to sweatshops. most of our agents overseas who overlooked our manufacturers would find unapproved practices during surprise visits. and we would immediately, stop production at that factory until we felt we could trust them again.
anyway, please don't shop at h&m for another reason. one of the stores in chicago refuses to discipline or fire an employee who harassed an asian woman or his managers who refuse to do anything about it. please sign the petition: http://www.gopetition.com/online/15067/sign.html
I'm getting mixed signals over H&M, so I guess I won't shop there. Forever 21 seems OK, though. No outsourcing.
