winterlight
lord, these past few weeks have seen some pretty rainy weather...my studio mate amy had her italian boyfriend come to visit (his first time in the US) and 20 out of the 21 days he was here, it rained. it's terrible because this city is so pretty when you can actually get out to see it, and we generally have not so bad weather all year around. i guess since it doesn't snow or get below about the 40s it's not much to complain about! taking photos of anti-factory things in the winter light has totally sucked and taken me more time to color correct in photoshop than i would like. hence, when the sun shines it always makes me happier.
anyhow, yesterday saw a lovely break in the storm that came through, and sunlight spilled through the living room and reminded me of better days to come...

the living room in sunny glory

the new (to us) vintage rug all sun-dappled that we bought recently on ebay--from the genuine 60s and in perfect condition! it's not a "rya" but it sure looks like one!

not cold enough to bother green orchids. lovely green orchids. who would have thought?

that actually is a rya, a floor-rya. could even be originally finnish design, sure looks like one. in the 60's Metsovaara and other designers made huge amounts of floor-rugs for export to the states...says the finn.
I have a rya that is supposed to be a Metsovaara design/make.I would really like to authenticate it. I can send a photo to anyone who has the knowledge. It is primarily red to orange and has a Nautilus design. Please send me a note: laiva@swbell.net and I will respond with photo. I collect these wonderful pieces of art. The oldest, woven in the late '30s in a home for Finnish refugees of Karelia, has a story of its creation. It is called "Sprout". Don Shipman, 214 763 2957, Dallas TX...laiva@swbell.net
