aesthetic trainwreck

I have just discovered my new favorite Winter Olympics Sport: men's figure skating! I found myself squealing with delight and yelling at the TV "Aesthetic trainwreck! Aesthetic trainwreck!" as the skaters would come out in their most gaudiest of outfits. Oh, those Russians--what a fashion statement--one wore a black sparkly outfit and a jaunty red cravate-like thing around his neck! And the Swiss guy dolled up in black and orange tiger stripes with blue sleeves...And Johnny Weir. He takes my breath away in floaty blue shades of chiffon that stream from asymmetric points of his body, along with white mesh accents. I am stunned into silence.
I had no idea I needed to pay more attention to men's figure skating, but at this point I have decided that it is my new pet hobby. Oh, and "ice dancing" (whaaaaaaat?) comes in at a close second due to the *pairs* of gaudily dressed people, but it's more boring since they all have to do the same damn routine. A bit weird, if you ask me.
Come see the paradise:

So happy is he...

Hilarious! This winter olympics is making me wish I had a TV. A while ago I decided I could live without a TV but not without the internet!
omigosh, stephanie, you are too funny! i'm jockin on that first guy's sparkly black and blue number. maybe you could do side work and design costumes for the men's ice skating competition. :-P
did you see the skater, who, at the end of his performance, 'tore away' a panel of fabric from his chest to reveal flames?? oh how the passion and energy needed to be released! i think it was a french or canadian guy during the short program. can't find a photo!
claddyjack--no TV? How do you survive???? Actually, the internet is just as bad so you might as well go out and buy a TV now. You've been ruined and you didn't even know it :)
amee, it's not me that's being funny...I truly tip my hat to the olympics for this one! um, i don't think i have the sheer creativity and hubris to design some of these things, really ;)
christina--lord, it only gets better and better, doesn't it? i missed that last part, didn't see the tearing away of the costume, so now i am really sad. my favorite part was when ALL of the skaters were on the ice whizzing around each other like little colorful birds showing off their plumage :D
I was out with a friend having drinks Thursday and this happened to be on the bar TV. We were completely mesmerized. We were, however, surprised that pretty much everyone was falling down during their program... is that normal? Oh, and I think that Russian dressed in black is pretty good looking, actually. Yeah, I'm thinking about asking him out. :)
