suck on this, retail!
I was pleasantly tickled when I opened today's newspaper and saw a story in the local section about a San Francisco group of 50 teachers, engineers, executives, and other professionals who have formed "the Compact"--a vow to not buy anything new except for food, hygiene and health items, and underwear. Ergo, they find everything second-hand. One member describes her shock at weaning herself away from the retail experience and the withdrawals she went through. The only think I can think of is "hasn't she ever run amok among the thrift stores?" I personally am one of those people who regularly sublimates the shopping urge by just hopping into my local thrift store and usually scoring some awesome knick knack or another...Either way, it's great to hear others are consciously doing this as a group thing!
From the San Francisco Chronicle:
"Out of the retail rat race: Consumer group doesn't buy notion that new is better"

thanks for posting the article.
I love getting cute clothes and am constantly battling this...because sometimes those tops at Forever 21 are so hard to resist and I know I shouldn't be buying anything new ecspecially clothes cuz I could make them!
ah! forever 21 is my dark and scary passion. so cheap, so cute, and so guilt-ridden become I, when I shop there. it's funny, because you're right, we COULD make 'em ourselves, but when it's selling for, like, $12.99, it's so hard not to resist!
I chanced upon this page while looking for something else and the topic intrigues me. I already make a fair chunk of my own clothing as much of the offerings of retail either do not fit properly or, as in the case of horribly pricey shops, the size-system has been altered from the industry standard to accommodate their clients' insecurities. Now, for people to find out what size they truly are, the only way is to look at the back of a packaged pattern and get out a measuring tape. Thriftstores? That's where the rest of my wardrobe comes/is made from. With what's left over, I make quilts and experimental textile art.
'Recycle' should be a watchword for the world.
