we don't know how to drive over here

Seriously, we Californians (especially San Franciscans) don't know how to drive when there's snow on the ground. It barely gets below 40 degrees during winter, so on the occasion that even hail comes down, we all drive like morons, me included. Going too fast, not taking turns easily, etc. The past few days has seen SNOW around the area. I repeat: SNOW. It's crazy! Well, it's not in the City proper, but right across the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin County (Sausalito, to be exact) there was a major 28 car pileup (!) due to everyone sliding around. That stretch of highway is SUPER downhill and curvy, and I'm always a bit freaked out going down it during normal weather. We go that way to visit Kurt's mom in Fairfax--about 45 minutes away--so it was really freaky to see pictures of the pileup and all that SNOW on the ground.
Did someone say spring was around the corner? It's hard to believe with all the cold we've been having lately!

um...stephanie? there's some snow behind the trees, but uh...there's none on the road! and it's sunny and i definitely see greenery! not to make light of the pile up, but yowsa! were they just *looking* at the snow and hence wrecked because of the distraction??
yah, perplexing, huh, valerie? now it looks like all these drivers are really bad steerers in general, but actually, the crash happened at 2am when there was sleet and ice on the ground. it's ironic since the next day it looks like there's hardly anything on the road and just some slushy stuff hanging out on the sides--and not much of THAT either! oh, you east coasters must be confused at our california driving confusion ;p but seriously, it was a bad pileup on an oft-travelled road :(
That sucks about the accident. Clevelanders always forget how to drive the very first time it snows each fall (like, in October) and then we remember how to drive in snow until it goes away for good (April, sometimes May).
you forgot to mention stephanie that these people just came out of a big tunnel then the freeway goes down, down, down (i live about an hour north of sf and used to drive this often to get to "the dig"; btw: you've of course been to the best pickin spot in sf for material and vintage goods, right??). a freak snowstorm/sleet/ice would make anyone not expecting it at 2am slam around. especially there!
"Doopty doopty doo--Oh my god what the hell is that white stuff? Oh dear god it's everywhere!"
Ah yes, it's times like these when I hear about people getting snow outside of the mountains down there that kinda make me glad I'm not back there. Though, I can't say I ended up any place better... I mean come on, Kansas? I am glad that I just happened to be in the midwest by the time I was able to take drivers ed, because they mentioned that very vital bit of info that saves lives--slow the eff down! Honestly though, I can see people panicking as soon as their tires loose traction, and steering wildly in hopes to correct their vector. I'll tell you right off the bat, any time the car ends up perpandicular to the road while still traveling the course of the road at about 40mph is kinda scary in the least...
