debaser

ADDENDUM added 4/6: if you are at interested in participating, PLEASE email me at: stephanie (at) anti-factory.com THANK YOU THANK YOU! Maybe we can work something out?

this is an image of a hand crocheted "chanel" clutch purse i completed a short while ago. it's based loosely on a photo i saw on the internet (with a few liberties, but please don't mind them--just pretend it is an "exact" copy). at least, an "exact copy" as to the best of my ability rendered in crochet and using cheap acrylic yarn. it has two button closures on the front flap and i did my best to integrate the "quilted" squares look of the original. it's a first pass, not as intricate as future designs, and is also missing some small details and a removable strap. i just made it to see if i would like the general idea.

the project will include more complicated designs of other types of bags (pocket ones, hobo slouchy ones, clutches, etc--the gamut). the more complicated ones will involve written patterns so others can make the same because ultimately i want them to be made by not just me. actually, i'm sort of irrelevant except that i have to make the pattern.

a few questions:
--has anyone heard of people who do "crochet-for-hire?". in other words, are there grandmas (or something like them) out there that would be willing to get paid to pr

oduce one (or more) of such items?
--can such grandmas be hired?
--do you have a grandma like this or am i just imagining such possibilities?
--are you not a grandma but would be willing to be paid to make one (or more) of such purses using written crochet instructions and given a photo of the finished product?
--or would something else be a good motivating factor, like a barter system consisting of anti-factory clothing for a handmade purse?

here's the deal: i WANT strangely-made crochet purses in which someone is given a pattern of instructions and--for a fair wage or trade--they execute it to the best of their ability, which may even make it look odd and lumpy and not quite "right" in the end. it's about the "mis-translation" of high-end into a low-end medium, taking advantage of an individual's idiosyncratic understanding and skills of the thing. or they could look beautiful, it almost doesn't matter.

Crochet-for-hire...Fairly paid, locally made (in the US). PLEASE tell me if you know of such a thing!

Steph, this is your mom delurking - finally something to contribute. You could try posting small classified ads at yarn shops for freelance crocheters. Knitting designers hire freelance knitters all the time to execute their patterns, etc. HTH, if you want me to try a pattern, and you know I don't know how to crochet - that might be interesting...

I have a couple of co-workers who crochet quite a bit. They make baby blanket, hat, other projects too. Let me show your website to them tomorrow and see if they are interested.

I am sure there would be a ton of knitbloggers (who also crochet) that would love to help out. Dude I would totally crochet you up a purse for an antifactory top but I'm neither American or in the US!! Should I post about it on my blog?

Hi, I'm not sure what kind of volume you are thinking, but I would be interested in working out some sort of barter deal. Email me and hopefully we can work something out.

It seems like you would have enough fans/ customers who crochet that would do it. I would definitely crochet a few purses in exchange for an anti-factory item! They always sell out so fast.

WOW! no wonder i do this thing called a blog--such a wealth of ideas and resources out there, thanks you guys :D

addendum to Kat: i realize i didn't provide enough information earlier to clarify: international makers (outside of US) are just great! it's just i didn't want someone to recommend "sweatshop" crocheters in india or china to work for pennies for me (is there such a thing?). KAT, wow, that's so great of you to offer--i'll drop you a line ASAP.

Christine, thanks, too! Please let your co-workers know I will pay them for their services. I'm not looking for mass production, either. If they want/can make just one or even two, that would be awesome!!!!

angela/mom, it would be awesome to have you work on something for me with rudimentary crochet knowledge. i should try to call you later...

all of you, if you are serious about following up, please email me at: stephanie(at)anti-factory.com

THANKS! SO EXCITED :D

My grandmother told me a while ago that when she was younger she would go to the churches or nursing homes and hire the women to crochet items for her shop.
