what saturday was about...

Yep, this sucker was made on a 1980s Brother knitting machine (don't be fooled, "machine" doesn't mean automated! there was tons of manual handmoving and pattern-following!). It's actually for an art auction at Southern Exposure gallery later this week. I had a flash of inspiration in the shower that morning and had to march right out to the yarn store for some merino wool. Originally I was just going to go to my studio and drag out a photo or something or other to contribute and then just thought: "hey! it's an auction, maybe I should be more self-conscious about it and send in something that is more like a "product" about art, as opposed to "art". Wouldn't that be an ironic gas?" OK, that was my reasoning, at least.

But no matter, I really love it and I think it will be a "limited edition" with one artist proof (which I will wear, of course!). It has long tassels at either end, and I had to make the pattern by first using Courier font in Photoshop and then blowing it up to pixelate it, then importing it into Adobe Illustrator where I made a grid drawing to the right size (whew!).I tried to use MicroRevolt's KnitPro, but to no avail, it wasn't giving me enough detail...

I'm dropping it off at the gallery today, so sorry to see it go. Not sure when I'll have the time to make myself one (it was about six hours of concentration, plus one and a half of edge-stitching and tassel-making).

Future possibilities: "I (heart) Richard Artschwager," "I (heart) Minimalism," I (heart) Donald Judd," etc. I'm laughing over here...

with my limited idea of what conceptual art is, the scarf does make me giggle, especially after all the work that goes into making the pattern and using the knitting machine. Definitely self-conscious, better than the photo (unless you regularly consume the items in the photo?). narf!
as the saying goes - if you love something, set it -your idea/the scarf itself/your love of conceptual art- free! or in this case, share it with others and give it up for auction!
