tunic fiesta

i'll be adding yet another batch of new anti-factory goods in a few days (prolly monday?). i took all the photos but need to make the webpages and take measurements, etc. if anything, i'm pretty excited about the new silhouette i'm working with: longer tunic lengths that have banded bottoms, so they can *almost* be miniskirts for the very brave, but are generally safer as tops over leggings or jeans. all the new fashion mags have some damn awesome new fall looks happening, and it's so hard to be thinking about woollens and sweaters when the weather is now in the 80s/90s in SF, but it makes me look forward to the upcoming season, fer sure!

the new batch preview goes something like this:

this one has *gold* 80s fabric at the chest and magenta polka-dots--yow!

detail of the applique on chest:

flower pow! (this one's a regular top, not the extra-long length)

then of course there's the extra-fun graphic tops with funny colors and patterns like this one:

on another note: i spent a good part of the day going shopping and trying to find pants that fit me. i swear, there's something about pants that make them ultra-elusive and soooo hard to find a good pair. the new skinny jeans styles are all of the super-low waist variety and i HATE the way they feel--like your ass is about to pop out of it and it cuts off the circulation of your hips. i can't wait until they burn all of these and the regular-waisted look comes back again. eegads, it's not like i have too much extra around the middle at all, except for some reason the low-waist jeans make me look like i have "muffin top" above the waistline. how sad. needless to say, my jeans excursion was fruitless and i'm starting to wonder if i really do have to plunk down over $100 for a decent pair. i've never done this before and i loathe to start now.

what's a girl to do? oh, all you on internet land reading this here blog right now, if you can recommend any brand (with pricing? that would be nice...) of jeans that you swear by, please help this hapless gal in her elusive search. i want preferrably skinny leg with a normal waistline height. muchas gracias in advance!

Oh dear, I'm in lust, hehe. Needless to say, I'm going to have to scrape some money together from somewhere, anywhere, to get some of your newest goodies.

Paying over $100 for a pair of jeans is so ridicuous in my eyes. I can understand it when they are organic cotton, but not when they are just some flashy celebrity brand. I'm with you on all these low waists as well - I feel so much more fit and confident when my jeans are at my "natural" waist.

As far as brands, I don't have much in the way of recommendations because I am struggling with the same thing. My favorite places to look are vintage/thrift shops and try on the guys jeans

Hey, Steph - we just got back from Tokyo and one jeans idea I saw was a modified double waistband. It looked like they added the cut off waistband from a regular jeans and sewed it to the inside of a low-waistband jean, pockets and all. It definitely caught my eye on the subway and then I found it in several boutiques. Your tunic over slim pants/leggings cum mini is definitely the look over there and I've got pics to show...

Met Kat and Darin in Kichijoji and Pinku rocks!

Let's have dinner soon,

There are so many brands these days that come out almost every 6 months, is sick. I swear by 7 for All Mankind and Citizen of Humanity. I have been wearing these two brands for at least 5 years (since they pretty much came out) and I looove the way they fit and feel. Prices range from $125.00 to $250.00, they are WORTH it.! AG's are also a nice fit BUT you have to like low waist and you don't ;)

Good luck Stephanie. I like the tunic designs, maybe I can buy one and wear it even pregnant.

I think the best jeans I have been able to find for under 100 are Mavi (around $78) and Lucky (around $90). They have a "midrise" waist. Also, I know Red Engine Jeans make midrise waist lines - but they are usually $140. In general, I resort to Filene's Basement because I can those kind of things for much cheaper! My personal predicament is finding jeans that aren't too long! Can't wait to see your new stuff!!

can I just leave you the BIG HUGE LARGEST GIANTEST props for being featured in Bust!?? I cant tell if you already blogged about this b/c i have been totally blog-reading AWOL for a while but I was like "OMG ITS STEPHANIE I LOVE HER!" when I opened the issue!

Hi Stephanie,
It was so great to see you in BUST! The new issue arrived in the mail on Friday and I flipped through this weekend and saw your picture in the article profiling a few of the very best refabricating clothing artists. Nice :)
As for jeans, yes I too wish the poorly tailored unflattering super low waistline styles would go away immediately. But $100 or more per pair just to get a few more inches of coverage seems like extreme measures.
Could you try something more standard by Lee, Wrangler, or Levis and then narrow the legs as needed on your sewing machine? I online order levi's from DenimExpress.com because they have a bigger selection of colors and sizes than any real store and they allow you to return or exchange if they don't fit (a small restocking fee is charged). You could get 3 or more pairs for the price of one pair of designer label jeans.

Hope to see you in person around town again soon!

The tunics are wonderful.

There are a few brands where you can get regular or low-waist jeans (not ultra lows), but indeed, they are hard to come by.

On a side note, I've always wondered how best to describe a woman's look when her body seems to bulge over the jeans and when you wrote, 'muffin top' I shrieked, 'That's it!' Unfortunately the 'muffin top' look is more or less due to the obesity rate in the country, not necessarily just from ultra-low waist jeans. But thanks for writing that because I have a good way of describing that now. :)

Hi Stephanie,

I just looked up your site after reading about you in Bust. You've probably found some jeans by now, but I finally found some jeans recently that I think fit your bill.
The brand is called JAG, and I got them at a little store in Olema, CA called Epicenter for $60. That's the most I've ever paid for jeans, cuz I usually buy used ones, but it's been worth it. A friend of mine borrowed them one day, and, even though she has a totally different butt shape, they fit her perfectly, too. We both agreed that these jeans fit and stretch in all the right places, and they have a normal waist (not low but not super high, either). Just wanted to pass that on. -Caroline

heh! isn't it funny how a posting about jeans can elicit so many responses? looks like i'm not the only one out there obsessing over them :) thanks to all of you for the suggestions, i really appreciate it! I wonder if that means I have to start running around again and trying on all of them--they all come with such good recommendations!

i wish i was the clever one who thought up the term "muffin top" (when someone wears tight low-rise jeans and their fleshy parts spill out over the top--ick!) but someone much faster on the ball did. Lord, that term is SO apt and hilarious...

and thanks for the shout-outs regarding the Bust article, i feel so lucky to have been part of such a great group of designers spotlighted :). i was a bit surprised to see that at the tender age of 32 i am almost TEN YEARS OLDER than the youngest designer in the bunch. ouch! am i having a senior moment now? but what happens if i still feel 22?

;)

i have the exact same problem and I found a pair of mossimo jeans that were the perfect waist height, the perfect grey wash and shockingly they have skinny legs (but my ankle can still breath) other that that I had my favorite jeans (gap circa 1999) altered to be a straight leg from a boot cut and they are the best!
