NYC recommendations?
So.
I feel a bit weird casting this question out to the etherworld that is the internet, but can anyone recommend a relatively affordable place to stay in NYC (manhattan) during this mid-December? I would assume this is a hard question to answer since generally it's an expensive city, but you never know! I'll be there from around December 13 until the 17th or 18th for my show at PS1 and dang if most of my friends will be either out of town (no couch surfing) or have moved away...Argh!
Some folks have mentioned that the YMCA is surprisingly affordable and OK (West Side one) but the reviews online are spotty and, uh, I'm not young enough anymore to tolerate too much yuckiness so maybe this won't fly for me? Or are any of you fun online friends of mine going to be out of town and need a nice housesitter/squatter/niceperson? :)
I need to book a place soon--help!

pete and i have stayed there a couple times in the past. they are located right next to a subway station in tribeca. they used to be cheaper, but that was a couple years back, unfortunately...anyway, it's small but clean and convienent to other things (though perhaps not midtown...midtown is GROSS and touristy anyway!)
anyway...good luck, and congrats. i miss nyc terribly and i was i was still living there. :(
err, that should be "i WISH i was still living there".
this place is cheap, clean and great!

good luck, Elizabeth
I have heard Cosmohotel is good but not sure about price now. location is definitely good and there is AMAZING (i.e. tough on the wallet) restaurant called Freeman's across the street too! last time I needed a hotel room in nyc I did priceline the day before and got a 5-star room for like $125 near WTC. it is definitely worth checking out. you can pick # of stars, price range, location, etc so you won't end up in a total dump. good luck!!
This place, the Park Savoy, is mid-town and super cheap, but bare bones.

Thanks everyone!
Tricia, I checked with cosmo and they're sold out--boo hoo :( Great to know about, tho :)
Elizabeth, same with chelsea lodge. oh well.
Pauline, I may just have to do the last minute priceline thing like you suggested. in general, everything is booked for that weekend, which to me is weird because it's technically before the holidays, but i guess folks still want to go to NYC (duh).
rayreiko, Park Savoy is also booked. sigh.
You guys are very generous with the suggestions, though! Thanks again and if anyone has any other info, please pass it along :)
Hello,
My friend stayed here:

and said it was great. They have rates starting at $40/night and up to about $200, I think. Worth checking out!

Curses. We'll miss each other - I'll be in your parts while you are in NYC. But! You'll still need to recommend some good bars/bands for me to check out. :)
Not sure if you've found a place, but here's an artist collective that may track some couches for you:

Have you also checked craigslist and woogo.com?
Good luck with your show. I look forward to seeing it.
The Bowery Whitehouse, while I never stayed there, might be worth checking out. Location is great, downtown by the East village, Soho, Lower East Side.

Also chekc out http://ontheinside.info for recommendations by local personalities, not hotels but restaurants, shops and lounges.
Have a great time in NYC
Have you tried hostels? They offer cheap rates and some are convieniently located in Chelsea. Goodluck and enjoy your stay in nyc!
Re: BED BUGS ALERT
I would also strongly recommend searching to see if where you stay has a bed bug infestation. Beg bugs are huge in NYC at the moment and are everywhere, from the very high-end to the low-end accomendations. But do stay clear of the YMCA's and hostels, they are especially infested.
Good luck!
