bag ladies

oh my god. i am stunned almost into silence. someone of PURE GENIUS i tell you, has started a high-end designer bag "lending" site aptly named Bag, Borrow, or Steal (think designer bag "library", only you have to pay a subscription fee). What GENIUS!!!! i've always wanted to lay my hands on the real things so i could possibly incorporate them into some dastardly art projects, but could never figure out how i could finance such an endeavor. i think i would be way too scared to actually *wear* my borrowed bags, however.

Happy customer quote: "Not only does Bag, Borrow, or Steal make it easy to stay up on the latest trends with all their fantastic choices, but they also have the most AMAZING customer service I've ever dealt with!" Yay, we could always use decent customer service, can't we?

Genius, pure genius!

trash talkin'

Who doesn't like to hurl a little verbal trash every now and then--especially when it comes to celebrity outfits and the like? Have a super fun time cudddling up to these blogs:

Go Fug Yourself blog. Trash, trash, trash. I love it. It's like when I go to msn.com or yahoo.com after a major celebrity event like the Golden Globes or the Academy Awards and they do the expose on who had the best and worst outfits. A total trainwreck, yes it is!

Counterfeit Chic
blog. Written by a copyright lawyer and focused on issues of authenticity and "copying" primarily in the fashion industry, it smacks of a guilty-pleasures project by a professor who really would rather be shopping as opposed to giving that lecture. You go, girl!

Shangri-Law blog. Yay! More lawyers (or at least, Yale law school students) writing about fashion! Snarky and funny and elitist, it is a fabulous treck into the twisted minds of ladies who want their martinis, Manolos, and high-power law practices as well...Go academe! Kick some fashionionable butt with a smile.

Oh, and thanks to the Shangri-Law gals, i now know about the fire that destroyed the Rem Koolhas-designed Prada boutique on Broadway in Manhattan...It seems like $5 MILLION in spring merchandise went up in smoke. Which is the greater tragedy: the destruction of the merch or the architecturally-significant Koolhas building? I'm really sad I never went and visited now.

the Prada store in its former glory...alas, i never knew ye!

rock the night

Rock the night--last Friday night, that is!

I'm finally posting some pics to an art opening and then warehouse party we went to that featured four local San Fran bands. First stop was Queen's Nails Annex on Mission St., the gallery started by friends Bob Linder and Julio Morales. The artists were a duo from Mexico City, Marcela and Gina, with work ranging from installation, video, and photo documentation. Their work has involved bribing the Mexican police to participate in their performances and other such shenanigans. Next door to a real live nail salon, ("Queen's Nails", duh), you could go next door and get a single nail done that featured a design by the artists in question (see above--voila!). That giant nail had to be cut off the next day, as it was completely impeding any sort of normal movement of my hand. Very short lived.

me fascinated and yet totally freaked out by the idea of getting a giant fake nail. those poor vietnamese ladies who have to do this all day--sooooo toxic and fumey!

nail salon on the left, gallery on the right...got it?

My friend Mary Elizabeth throws music shows at her big space every now and then...the most infamous one burning in my mind happened 2 new year's eves ago, the climax being the Joy Division cover band and I was standing on a couch wasted out of my mind--Mom, maybe you should stop reading this, if you are--and looking around and everyone was just going bonkers and there was no room to move and if there were a fire or earthquake or other SF disaster it would have wiped out the entire music and art scene of the city, and i came up with the brilliant plan of jumping out of the 3-story window in case it did happen, to avoid being squished in the firetrap single stairway that led to the outside world...needless to say, the night featured no disaster and i didn't die...whew!)

The local music scene right now is sort of split between the new-folk acoustic genre, that generally features the likes of Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom, etc...Stuff that you can play in a bookstore or quiet gallery space and sounds a bit like old-timey music or croony lamentations full of wistfullnesses. And on the other hand is a new wave of noise (not "new wave", just noise) that mixes math rock, a little bit of electro, and lots of drone or "wave of sound" stuff--maybe sort of like Deerhoof, another SF local. Happily for me, the party was on the latter side--I've been trying to figure out why i'm not a fan of the "neo-folk". I think it's because I can't jump up and down and freak out to it. I like feeling my body vibrate with giant waves of sound and the spectacle of a band just losing it.

Paradise Island, the one-woman outfit featuring the ex-lead singer of local lesbian pop-rock Erase Errata (think LeTigre-like, but not) started off the set, with a spare girl-on-microphone-with-strobelights-and-a-single-beat-drum-machine collection...

Then on to Fuck Wolf, a total wall of sound with the singer from Spector Protector playing guitar and the lead singer from some other band i don't know. Quite awesome.

the F-word Wolf

My friend Wendy's band T.I.T.S. was on third. Short for "Totally InTo Sex" (hilarious!), they're an all-girl dark metal band (no, not like Cinderella or that old hair metal stuff--think early Black Sabbath) with two guitars, a base, drums, and everyone on vocals. They came out wearing vintage 60s nightie slips, long hair, and barefoot, like little angels. T.I.T.S. always brings out the crowd--if they weren't actually good they could easily be dismissed as a passing fad (oooo, an all-girl metal band) but not so.

T.I.T.S., all eight of them (2 x 4 girls, dig?). notice my giant red plastic party cup front and center, resting on the P.A. It's not a party until the plastic party cups start popping up in the photos, ha ha

We missed the fourth band cuz it just got waaaaay too late. Quite a scene--again, it was the "everyone who's anyone" in the music scene was there. And Kurt and I laughed about how it's now sort of hip to be a white musician going out with an Asian or South-East Asian girl. Seems to be the new "thing", except that good ole Kurt has been doing it for almost eight years already (congratulations, honey, you were an "early adopter" of the style!). Have to say, this city is almost half Asian, so it's not hard to follow that the cross-pollinations are rampant. We used to play a game that we dubbed "sushi restaurant" syndrome...go into a sushi restaurant and count how many white guy/asian girl couples there are (one point). you get TEN points if there is an asian guy/white girl couple (rather rare). One day we were at a sushi restaurant and we looked around and noticed that every single one of the couples there--like, seven total--were scoring us points! It made me feel like we were in some surreal replicant land. I don't know why we find this game so funny, maybe we're weird :D I mean, the moment we walk into a sushi restaurant we automatically score one point!

But i digress, don't i? funny how talking about one thing leads to a myriad of others...

ta-ta!

weird garble?

this is a kind of funny thing to ask, because if you can read this, well, then my blog is working fine. but i just noticed that in my Firefox browser, my blog page just displays a total weird garble. but then everything's fine in Safari, so i'm not sure what's up...does anyone have any answers to this? it just started to happen...

basically, if you are seeing this fine on a Firefox browser, send me a little comment saying it's ok, so i know it's maybe just happening on my computer ;p

thanks!

ADDENDUM: Well, it's later in the day (5pm) and it looks like the problem has fixed itself, so i guess good old blogger had itself a wee bit of a screw-up earlier! thanks again for letting me know i wasn't going crazy or doing somethin' wrong on my end :)

preview glances...

Some folks have emailed me about when I'll post new stuff to the store--yup, it seems like it's been a while, hasn't it :P But do not fear! There will be newness and hopefully goodness and lots of things...I'm aiming to restock probably by next Monday or Tuesday, so watch out!

In the meantime, here's yet more items that may be included in the upcoming batch, shown below...and OH! I almost forgot: if you really want more Anti-Factory NOW, high-tail it down to Hobbyhorse in Berkeley to choose from 2 jackets, three dresses, and some tops, too...Yeeeehaw!

ps--i know, it sort of sucks to show these on a mannequin (as opposed to being modelled) but trust me, when they really go up for sale, i will have 'em on a real body so you can see the fit and cut properly. Especially the jackets, it's sort of hard to tell when they're cropped how they fit, but trust me: all will be made clear...

...the back has *golden* dogs and an attached tie belt!

made of a grey sweatshirt with a puppy and kittens on the back...meow!

get on the good stuff

some fun things:

-----------------------------

Based in the UK, TRAID (Textile Recycling for Aid and International Development) is an organization devoted to recycling and restyling vintage and used clothing. They put on edgy fashion shows and even have boutiques dedicated to reconstructed items. Politically and socially-conscious, this would be a wonderful example for some organization to start up here in the ole U.S. of A., don'tcha think? Thanks to Sarah in the UK for this hot link...

-------------------------------

"Rebecca Turbow makes safe clothing..." so says her website. plus, you can buy some amazing handmade things in the online store, so check it out if you wanna dress like a retro 60s' handmade space maiden twiggy girl. they're super awesome.

-------------------------------

Cat Chow is the name of a girl in Chicago, as well as a pet food, and no, neither are related in any way. Her clothing designs are fashionable artworks that would be rather hard to wear, but are awfully interesting. Above is a top made of...phone cords.

totemo kawaii!!!

"totemo kawaii!", or, "so cute!" in japanese...but so really, really, weird, too!

last night i saw "My Neighbor Totoro" on TV by complete accident and it was totally amazing. i think i've been on a miyazaki kick lately (the director) as last week they were showing "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" (Kaze no tani no nauzicaa) which i actually saw in Tokyo when i was 11 years old and transported me back into a fantasy land fueled by a childhood spent growing up on the "The Dark Crystal," "The Rats of Nimh" and "Legend," all of which are a mix of dark gothiness and girlie fantasy. totally rockin'!

gotta hand it to them japanese--they sure know how to really put a spin on animist religions and weird creatures...if you haven't seen any Miyazaki films, i suggest you highttail it straight to the video store (or wherever else you get your dvds) and be in for a real treat.

corporate boho

oh, look...i don't mean to be so dour-sounding all the time. yes, fashion is fashion, and we all know how much we love it and participate in it, and make it, and wear it, and, well, just love it! and i don't wanna always come off as being a finger-wagging guilt-ridden pc-espousing anti-corporate socialist. but indulge me in one last thing, why don't you? ;)

...so after a bit more rummaging around on the internet, i came across a nice and concise article about the commodification of this handmade "boho" hippie chic that is sweeping the nation, and an interesting musing on its implied cultural globalization.

"Everywhere, young women are donning batik skirts and beaded slippers as encouraged by the high-fashion architects of this summer's big trend: bohemian chic...The only problem is that the ethnic patchwork is contrived. Young women who have never traveled out of their zip code are dressing like they just came back from a whirlwind tour of Nairobi, Prague and the Khyber Pass. While some girls really did get that embroidered blouse in the former Soviet bloc, most of them have patched together their summer wardrobes at the Gap, Urban Outfitters, or United Colors of Benneton. And most of them have done so in blissful -- or willful -- ignorance of where their clothing actually came from..." (read: sweatshops, duh)

"Put on a Hippy Face: What's the real story behind the new trend of "ethnic" bohemian fashion?" by Holly Beck, posted on Alternet, 8/3/05

ooof. i am starved now. must...have...sushi! :)

urban outfitters = SATAN

several reasons why urban outfitters is a purely satanic manifestation:

1. crappy badly-made, high-priced clothing spun mostly out of *acrylic* (lord!), or some other type of fabric that will eventually pill and look horrible

2. the new "DIY"/indie aesthetic that they've been channelling, the "hand-beaded" or "handmade" look in the clothing they carry (which is probably all made by twelve-year-olds in china or india, in reality). last time i wandered into the store, it was chock-full of their "Urban Renewal" remade/reconstructed brand and it irritated me to no end to see how they've cornered the market on the aesthetic. I'm very curious to be proven wrong about their manufacturing practices on this one...like, is all this stuff assembled locally or sent overseas?

3. ill-fitting clothing that makes my crotch look strange, or sits too low on my hips, or is too tight. the sizing on the clothing is just whacked-out crazy! who's the pattern maker on crack?

4. when things get marked down, they are so drastically marked down it makes you realize how much of a MARK-UP they do when selling retail. it should be criminal!

5. this clinches it: the posting at the supernaturale website that shows how UO ripped off a t-shirt design by small-time designer Johnny Cupcakes. You be the judge and check it out, but the story stinks. Says the designer, "...this company is my life, and this awful, scummy situation upsets me..."

OK, here's the deal: copying/influence, etc, happens on all levels--in both the fashion world and the artworld. like, everyone's doing puff sleeves, but does that mean someone's ripping off the first person who did puff sleeves? no, of course not. But what chaps my hide is the BIG guy absorbing the LITTLE guy's turf. urban outfitters is a giant octopus bloodsucking freak that churns out fashion at an alarmingly disposable rate. and since they have the production means and the outlets to move the merch at a fast pace, they can undercut everyone and look like they're offering edgy, individualized fashion.

bah! i'm on a rant...

!

hi everyone, sorry i've been so quiet and not posting anything lately. The new school year started, and with it my commute to both Oakland (to the CCA campus) and Palo Alto (Stanford) which takes up a good 3 days out of my week now. So much shuffling of papers and getting syllabi ready, xeroxing things, reorganizing slide presentations, etc. Anyhow, the first week is over (almost 2 for Stanford already!) and so now i'm a bit less hectic...let me stress the "bit" less hectic part.

first off, it looks like i won't have new items in the anti-factory store for another week or so...thanks to everyone who's been so supportive of the new designs...i promise there's more to come! i'm in the middle of getting new things made and i just dropped off a bunch of stuff to hopefully participate in a photoshoot for Readymade Magazine. Hey, didn't i just sort of cap on that magazine in one of my last posts? well, i guess when they ask to include me in a photoshoot it's hard to say no (i'm such a sucker). they're doing a spread on recycled/reused fashion and hobbyhorse boutique in berkeley has teamed up with a bunch of local DIY fashion folks to participate. watch for it! we're all crossing our fingers that this will actually go through, and there's some talk that it won't even involve a "proper" fashion shoot and just have mannequins modelling the items, which would actually kind of suck because it's not the most exciting way to show off the wares. oh well! can't say no to good publicity, of course :D

i have a big studio visit with an undisclosed group of folks happening in a week, so i'm in the middle of getting my artwork in order and making things presentable. i've been toying with a new photo/video series of works that involve downloading images from the internet and creating small dioramas out of them that get placed in "real world" settings, and then turned into either static video shots or large-scale photos. don't ask me yet what all the particulars are about, except that i guess i can say i'm interested in the mediated image and certain irreconcilable differences between existing in the First and Third worlds. "Hmmmmm....?" you may ask...well, let's see what happens, is all i can say!

photos of some newnesses

ok, some previews...these are prototype items that will probably get some "embellishing" and added things to them before they go out into the world. pardon the crapped-out photos--these were taken at night and some have flash on 'em--oh well!

little cropped puff sleeve jackets--made out of sweatshirt material so it's super soft and stretchy! i've never worked with sweatshirt material and am now totally into it...the trick is finding brand-new never worn ones that have been thrifted so they don't have all those "pills" on the inside. these ones are in perfect condition!

a fitted look...(gee, my hair is getting long)

single button that fastens above the bust...also made out of a sweatshirt

made of a thick white textured wool sweater...VERY retro, almost 40s-looking!

will post photos of dresses soon :D

newnesses

one word: dresses. and little jackets (okay, that's four words). but these are the things that i'm trying to perfect--new items to expand the anti-factory line of tops. the dresses are particularly exciting! i made a pattern based on a beloved polkadot dress that i constantly wear and so far have made three lovely dresses out of various vintage fabrics. am really looking forward to posting these sometime soon! also, on the jacket front, i have perfected a cropped puff-sleeve pattern and have made several little ones out of sweatshirt material--believe me, they're really cute! aaaaaa! so tempting to keep 'em...

anyhow, just a little update that my repertoire of tops is gonna be expanding into a more varied line of other items--huzzah!

dang, have i already said how much i love what's out there on the internet! in another attempt to give a random product endorsement i bring to you the results of what a lovely gal emailed me: a link to shitbegone, the responsibly-minded recycled toilet paper company started by a guy in brooklyn. he devotes a lot of webspace to describe the entire process of how he goes about sourcing and distributing his product, and it's rather amazing, let me tell you...i really appreciate the transparency and the neat little diagram he made to show how his operation works.

plus, shipping is free! buy now! yes, you need bulk toilet paper so you'll never have to run out and get any for a year or so...shit, "be gone" i say!

stragglers!

for those of you who missed out on the last posting of stuff to the anti-factory store, i just added 2 new "stragglers" that i somehow forgot about yesterday! check 'em out--the "red liebchen" one with the embroidered ribbon at the yoke is particularly fetching...silly me didn't make it my own size or else it woulda probably gotten thrown into my closet :)

"ms. liebchen" herself

"pink feathers corduroy"

i spent some part of the day working on a new lightweight jacket pattern based on a much beloved little cropped one i have with short sleeves and puffed shoulders. i think it'll be a harbinger of things to come...jackets! will post photos on the progress of these when i can...

winterlight

lord, these past few weeks have seen some pretty rainy weather...my studio mate amy had her italian boyfriend come to visit (his first time in the US) and 20 out of the 21 days he was here, it rained. it's terrible because this city is so pretty when you can actually get out to see it, and we generally have not so bad weather all year around. i guess since it doesn't snow or get below about the 40s it's not much to complain about! taking photos of anti-factory things in the winter light has totally sucked and taken me more time to color correct in photoshop than i would like. hence, when the sun shines it always makes me happier.

anyhow, yesterday saw a lovely break in the storm that came through, and sunlight spilled through the living room and reminded me of better days to come...

the living room in sunny glory

the new (to us) vintage rug all sun-dappled that we bought recently on ebay--from the genuine 60s and in perfect condition! it's not a "rya" but it sure looks like one!

not cold enough to bother green orchids. lovely green orchids. who would have thought?

hap hap happy new year!

in with the old, out with the new--well, somewhat! some things are good to keep and fabulous to keep working on...my big new year's resolution is to keep boning up with more reading on the issues that really float my boat, namely economics and alternatives to the global capitalist system as it is currently set up.

can't tell the difference between a "liberal" ideology and "neo-liberal" economics? well, here's a primer made just for you courtesy of Global Exchange: "Global Economy 101". Get the facts straight and learn what the heck is going on! CAFTA, NAFTA, FTAA, WTO, huh? talk about exciting!
