artsourced

I've heard about these "painting villages" in China where whole armies of people are put to work painting replicas of Van Goghs and other popular images for a Western public eager to snatch 'em up at bargain prices. According to this article, it's like a version of an art sweatshop. First off, this tells something about the horrid state of the art appreciating public out there (Monet reproductions? kitsch, I tell you!). And just as equally, the yuckiness of people "hand-painting" under these conditions.

Lordy! Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction, indeed!

Anti-Factory RESTOCK: Toastyland!

Toastyland? Toastyland? What or where, pray tell, is "toastyland". Toastyland is what happens when I start running out of fun euphemisms for the fact that fall is starting to shift into winter and it's starting to get a wee bit cold out. But I think you get my drift, eh? Smart people!

New stuff in store now! And a sale is happening over in yonder vintage section, so don't forget...

hallowe'en?

What is that old way of spelling Halloween, the one with the apostrophe somewhere in it? Anyhow, Kurt and I are going to a Halloween party this saturday night, courtesy of his bandmate Phillip, and I'm assuming some serious costume shenanigans will ensue. Which is making me obsess about what costume i'm gonna put together. Am thinking of recycling an old favorite (if i still have her somewhere in the basement) which is the "arctic cave woman" outfit. I LOVE this outfit--it's got what looks like fake white wolf fur to create a wolf head hood, and little bits of fur like a bikini. Then there's the white wolf fur-covered boots and giant spear. Not to mention my caveman consort, which makes for a handy accessory.

Behold arctic cave woman outfit, circa 2002:

I turn into a real ham when it's Halloween I guess ;)

Whatcha you gonna be?

It will happen...yes, it will

Sigh! I finally got all my photos taken of the new Anti-Factory clothes and have processed the webpages and am now waiting until a chunk of time when I can update the website to reflect all the newnesses that is the new batch! Again, lots of sweaters and I'm totally groovin' on merino wool. Oh, merino wool, how I love thee so--lightweight, cozy, and soft against the skin. N-i-c-e.

Anyhoo, in the interim, here's preview pics. I'll be aiming to update the store this Friday in the afternoon or something :)

Off the grid and then some...

"Yo, what up? Where've you been?" you must be asking...or not, heh heh. Needless to say, yep, i've been remiss in posting, but that will change with more willpower. Been pretty dang busy with school-related issues and getting my syllabus together for next semester. Exciting exciting.

BUT! Visit this flickr set to see pics of my recent "off the grid" excursion. Hippie craft-o-licious :)

And then here's the flickr set of the last T.I.T.S. show that rocked out my world. Think Robert Palmer girls with beards. Yeah, like that. Word.

Will post more soon! And a clothing update is in the works... :)

back from LA!

Hey all! It's been a while... I just got back from a whirlwind trip to LA for two days and just one night (whew!). As part of a team-taught first-year Graduate Seminar class at the art school I teach at, we did an extended field trip to visit alternative artspaces in LA, as well as the larger institutions. Visited were: The Museum of Jurassic Technology ('natch), CLUI (Center for Land Use Interpretation), Machine Project in Echo Park, all the galleries in Chinatown, plus Ooga Booga, the Institute for Figuring, a panorama project, and then the next day was UCLA, the Hammer, Gagosian, ACE, and then the Prada store in Beverly Hills (ha!). More on all this later...ran into random friends on the street which is amazing since LA is so sprawling. Needless to say, I'm finding LA more and more interesting and a potential for moving to...

will post more soon. fun times!

oh, and if there isn't already too much to read in this world, I just made my thesis paper available as a PDF online. Now you can read more than you ever wanted to know about my artistic practice and how I see it relating to late-capitalism and the need for alternatives, plus a shifting and internationally hybrid Filipino identity. Yeah. Rock on.
