Evidence
1997
Unique
Polaroid series of sewn velvet, each 3.5" x 5"
Like
crime scene documents, these Polaroids record a residue of sorts--in
this case, a strategically placed sewn velvet "splotch"
that, at a distance, looks like the site of an unspecified violence.
Taken at night, the flash from the camera bounces off the fabric's
surface, creating bright highlights that, on closer inspection,
betray its material. A kind of "portable accident or incident,"
Evidence sparks an anxiety that eventually fails to deliver.
The notion of photography as providing a true document or frozen
moment is under scrutiny, as a false and perhaps even undecided
intention is ultimately documented.
