Self Portrait as Sculptural Extrusion

Personality Conflict, pencil on paper, 50" wide

This drawing is based on different graffiti styles renderings of my last name overlapped on top of each other

Self Portrait as Sculptural Extrusion and
Personality Conflict

2004

foamboard, tape, and pencil on paper

A graffiti-font version of my last name is built in tapered panels so it looks like a 3D sculptural “projection”. I have worked with this graffiti signature in recent projects to play at creating my own “Mission School Alter-Ego” (I have lived and worked in the Mission district for almost ten years and am not considered in this category). This version tries to pull in a variety of influences and multiple identities to question categories of authorship and originality, referencing Mission School art stardom, graffiti art, CAD and vector drawings, ex-San Francisco artist Stephen Hendee, and finally, myself.
